The world ever largest optical and infra red telescope is being built by Chile. This project work is currently going on, and it is hoped that by the year 2024, the telescope would be set on the research center locate on the top of a mountain in the country at a good elevation of 3,046 m.
The Feature of This Biggest Telescope
This giant Telescope would have a very large mirror with a diameter of 39 m. European Southern Observatory has planned to complete this amazing project. The main feature of this biggest telescope is that it can correct atmospheric turbulence so that distant objects can be seen clearly.
On the other hand scientists from Oxford University have an important role in this great work and are merely responsible for making an instrument called 'Harmoni' that can take simultaneously 4,000 images. This can help to produce really sharpest images that are slightly different in colors. It is also believed that Harmoni will help scientists to study about the formation and evolution of space objects with much more details. Every thing that happens in the planets and moons in our solar system can be studied and even scientists can gather more details and hidden facts about other stars and solar systems in our galaxy.
'ELT (Extra Large Telescope) will be useful to unveil many interesting facts about our Universe and it's going to be an element of exploring the unknown', says Niranjan Thatte, the principal investigator of this instrument and professor of Astrophysics in Physics department of Oxford University.
