A sound knowledge about different parts of a digital camera is necessary for being an expert in photography and it'll be helpful for the beginners to handle a camera successfully. In advanced types of digital cameras we can find some interesting added features and parts. Let us discuss about them.
The Lens
This is very important part of camera which works like a human eye. It involves converging light rays and the focal length of each lens determines angle of view that's possible to cover. According to their focal length, lenses are classified into three categories: Wide-angle lens, Telephoto lens and Normal Lens. Wide angle lens has a focal length of below 50 mm and can cover an angle view from 60 degree to 80 degree and the Telephoto lens has focal length more than 50 mm and its angle view coverage is between 5 degree and 20 degree. Normal lens can cover angle view from 43 degree to 45 degree with the focal length of around 50 mm. The lenses with different focal length can be used in SLR and Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens cameras However, it's not possible with Compact and Bridge type of cameras.
The Aperture and Shutter
It's the device that controls the amount light entering through the lens. Usually it has a circular or polygonal shape and is made of two thin metal sheets sliding on each other. The sliding metal sheets can create the variation in size of aperture and also the amount of light that can reach sensor. The Shutter is the device used to pass light through the lens for a certain period of time.
The Sensor
In ordinary photography the light that reflects from an object is recorded on a film where as in digital photography sensor is used instead of the film. It's nothing but a chip made of millions of cavities called photo-sites or pixels arranged in rows and columns. CCD, CMOS and FOVEON are commonly used sensors in digital cameras They are in different sizes in different types of cameras. The resolution of sensor is measured in megapixels. For example, a sensor with a resolution of 1 megapixel can make images with the resolution of 1000 x 1000 pixels
Mirror Pentaprism
Single Lens Reflex cameras are provided with this kind of feature. It has a mirror with the 45 degree inclination to the lens, and a pentaprism. The mirror will reflect the light entering through the lens and helps to see the image of object through the view finder. The pentaprism added here will fix the image that's going to be captured.
View Finder and LCD Screen
This will help to get the preview of image going to be shot. Galilean view finder, Single-lens reflex viewfinder and Digital viewfinder are different kinds of view finders. LCD Screen is found in all types of cameras. The most of the compact cameras are using LCD Screen to frame the image.
Flash
This is a device that produces momentary flash of light which may be helpful to take pictures in dark .
Processor
This involves processing of data collected from the sensor, making of images and storing into the memory card.
Memory Card
This will help to save the images.
