Interesting Facts About Amazon Rainforest

 The biggest tropical forest in the world, Amazon Rainforest is often known as Amazonia , the land of biodiversity which covers more than 5 million sq km in Brazil of South America. This is indeed a paradise for the ones who study about rare species of plants and animals. It is estimated that there are more than 500 different mammal species live in this rainforest. And it is the home for about 1500 species of birds and 30 millions of different insects. The great river Amazon with more than a thousand tributaries flowing in this region is the main source for the growth of abundant vegetation and surviving of animals and birds.



Important Plant Species of Amazon Rainforest

There are more than 40 thousands of plant species in this rainforest. The rainforest covers above 60% of world's total plant species. Bromeliads, Epiphytes, Carnivorous  Saprophytes, Ferns, Orchids and Lianas are some important plant species of the forest. Most of the trees growing in this region are so high and some of them grow even above 200 ft. The dense forests are naturally the shelter for the thousands of species of birds and insects. This is where we can also witness the world biggest flower of the world, Water Lily which has a diameter of 2 m.


Some Important Species of Mammals, Birds, Insects, Fresh Water Inhabitants And Amphibians in Amazon Rainforest

Jaguar, Ocelot, Capybara, Agouti, Sloth, Anteater,Bats, Tapir, Peccary and Monkeys are some important mammals species found in the region. Jaguar and Ocelot are belonged to the cat family and they both vary from size and rosettes on their body. Capybara and Agouti are the important rodents of Amazon forest and Capybara is the world biggest animal of the rodent family. Sloth and Anteater found in this region are belonged to Edentates. Some important surviving herbivores of the region are Manatee,Tapir and Peccary. Squirrel monkey is an interesting mammal specie and the world smallest monkey  Pygmy Marmoset is also existing in this forest


Parrot, Macaw, Harpy Eagle, Hoatzin, Toucan and Great Kiskadee are some important bird species of Amazon. We can see Macaws in different attractive colors. For example: Blue Macaws, Scarlet Macaws (red), Blue and Yellow colored Macaws and Green Macaws. The Macaws are the largest bird specie of the region which can grow up to 50 inches long. Toucan has a very large beak. Hoatzin is a vegetarian bird which will tend to eat only the fruits and seeds. Another bird Great Kiskadee is known for its aggressiveness and it won't allow other birds into its territory.


It is incredibly true that there are about 70,000 different species of insects exist in each acre of the forest. Butterflies, Moths, Caterpillars,Beetles, Bees,Ants, Grasshoppers and Spiders are some different types of insects in Amazon forest. There are more than 7000 species of butterflies existing here. Titan, Zigzag and Rhino are some beetle species. The Titan beetle is said to be the biggest insect of the forest. The Ants is another specie of insects which is classified into three families, Martialis Heureka, Army Ants and Leaf cutter Ants. The world most dangerous specie of spiders are also living in the forest. Tarantulas, Jumping Spiders, Brown Spiders and Wolf Spiders are some of them. Leaf mimicking insects are the most interesting species of the region.




The river Amazon with its many hundreds of tributaries has become home for more than 4000 species of fresh water inhabitants and amphibians. Pink Dolphin, Piranha, Anaconda, Turtle, Frog, Alligator and Crocodile are living in and as well as on the bank of Amazon river. The killer fish Piranha is the most dangerous one which grows up to 2 ft long. The Green and Yellow are two different species of Anaconda. We can also see here the world very rare species of frogs.




Deforestation of Amazon Rainforest

It's too bad to know that every year many hundreds of species of living beings in Amazon region have gradually disappeared due to deforestation. The Brazilian government has taken all necessary steps to control deforestation in order to protect rare living things existing in Amazon rainforest.
